Mullein, Common or Greek
Verbascum thapsus or Verbascum olympicum
Mullein is a stoic plant in a barren landscape and produces a ridiculous amount of seeds so be prepared. It is a biennial plant that produces a basal rosette in year one and a 6-foot flowering stalk in its second year. Drought tolerant, it is found growing in the desert canyons and on the mountain slopes in Nevada. Not a fussy plant and fertilizer is not necessary. I grow it on the edge of the garden where the water is more scarce and the seed doesn't propagate as well with the limited water.
